On ABC News’s This Week Doris joined host Martha Raddatz and the panel in Dallas, where talk centered on the ambush killing of five Dallas police officers, a result of the escalating tension over race and policing in our country. “What’s so heartbreaking as an historian is …the whole potent mix that produced those riots in ’67 and ’68 is still there. You want to learn from the struggles and the triumphs of the people who went before. What scares me most is that in a democracy, it’s so central that people from different sections and castes and races can see and feel each other and have fellow feeling and empathy. And that’s what we’re missing right now. President Teddy Roosevelt said you can’t have a democracy if people don’t understand each other’s points of view. So somehow that feeling–it’s not just knowing–it’s feeling what it’s like to be a black vulnerable to a police officer and feeling what it’s like to be a white police officer vulnerable to feeling that something is going to happen in their situation.”
