Doris Kearns Goodwin on Meet the Press (25 September, 2016)

On NBC’s Meet The Press, host Chuck Todd and panelists Gwen Ifill and Doris Kearns Goodwin discuss this week’s op-ed piece in The New York Times by Charles Ramsey, former Philadelphia Police Commissioner, about the opportunities to improve policing in this country following a wave of violence and Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump’s assertion that black communities have never been worse off than they are now — contrasted by the weekend’s opening of the first national African American Museum in Washington DC. “Things are happening. We’ve made enormous progress. Even in the police situation there are some best practices in some of the cities …in Tulsa they did a better job. I think we can’t have a sense of despair. Yes, for many people still living in the inner city it doesn’t seem like much has changed, but it certainly has compared to where we were …120, 130, 140 years ago.” Watch the conversation here.
