Lyndon Johnson and the American Dream: The Most Revealing Portrait of a President and Presidential Power Ever Written

Doris Kearns Goodwin on CNN Newsroom (16 September, 2015)

Ahead of tonight’s Republican presidential debate, Doris joins CNN Newsroom’s Brooke Baldwin to discuss the rising popularity of “outsider” candidates. “Clearly, there have been other times when there were outsiders… but the fact that non-politicians and people who have had very little political experience are on top of the world right now… says something about the political system today. It says something about campaign finance, which I would love for them to talk about tonight, because people feel the system is so broken—and somehow (candidate Donald) Trump is above all that because he is spending his own money. In a democracy, to not have respect for your politicians and people who have given their lives [to public service]… and when they become a dirty word as they have now, just shows we’re upside down in our democracy as a system,” says Doris.
