“The election it most reminds me of is 1948,” said presidential historian Doris Kearns Goodwin on Morning Joe. “Think about it. [Harry] Truman is on that train. Everybody says [Thomas] Dewey is going to win. So, it’s not only that the next morning he holds up a sign saying Dewey wins, (but) Life Magazine had to recreate its whole issue because it was based on Dewey’s cabinet. The reporters were all on the train. They all took a poll who is going to win. They all said it would be Dewey. [Journalist] James Reston wrote an apology for The New York Times – we didn’t look at intangibles. We saw the intensity of the support Truman had. People were coming up to him on the train, but the polls said he was going to lose.
