Doris Kearns Goodwin on MSNBC’s Morning Joe (10 November, 2016)

“The election it most reminds me of is 1948,” said presidential historian Doris Kearns Goodwin on Morning Joe. “Think about it. [Harry] Truman is on that train. Everybody says [Thomas] Dewey is going to win. So, it’s not only that the next morning he holds up a sign saying Dewey wins, (but) Life Magazine had to recreate its whole issue because it was based on Dewey’s cabinet. The reporters were all on the train. They all took a poll who is going to win. They all said it would be Dewey. [Journalist] James Reston wrote an apology for The New York Times – we didn’t look at intangibles. We saw the intensity of the support Truman had. People were coming up to him on the train, but the polls said he was going to lose. So we listened to the polls.” Listen to more of Goodwin’s conversation with the Morning Joe panel about the parallels between 1948 and 2016.
