But when a crisis comes—which means people can no longer handle it on their own—they look to the president for guidance. They want national direction, they want him to take responsibility. They want to feel that they’re all in it together, that they’re sacrificing together for the collective good. That’s what presidential leadership has to show in a time of crisis,” says Goodwin.
